DARMA News are written by the DARMA President and the board. It contains brief updates on topics considered of relevance to the DARMA members. News usually cover ongoing activities in the Board, news from the special interest groups, reflections on recent workshops and seminars, activities in sister societies etc.

    First of all, I would like to wish everyone a happy new year. It's a little late. But the new year has not only arrived, you blink twice, and it is already the end of the first month.

    In this newsletter I will look ahead for what 2020 will bring and dwell just a little on the 2019 activities.

    The board have just had the first board meeting of 2020 where we planned the upcoming activities for DARMA. So far, we have planned the following:

    • There is obviously the Annual Meeting and General Assembly, which will be held in Vejle this year where more members can attend. See more and sign up (registration opens in February) on http://darma.dk/event-3699719  
    • There is the Introduction Course which is relevant for those who are new in RMA (< 5 year experience). You can read more and sign up on http://darma.dk/event-3581160 please note that if your membership has not been renewed yet you cannot sign up online, but will have to contact the planning group on introkursus@darma.dk
    • The Master Classes continues. The next one is on Impact hosted by Hanne Dahl Mortensen from SDU. It will be held as a webinar 18 February 2020. Read more and sign up on http://darma.dk/event-3712560
    • The Topical Network on Research Indicators has a meeting on open science and bibliometrics 4 February in Kolding. You can sign up on http://darma.dk/event-3693121
    • Study tours. The study tour to Brussels will as usual be held in December. With the Horizon Europe coming up we are currently looking into expanding the number of delegates that can attend. A study tour to Copenhagen with focus on Foundations is under development, and we are also working with ARMS and SRA about a Study tour to Boston with a focus on leadership in RMA as a pre-event to the SRA International Annual Meeting 

    The DARMA homepage

    The board has decided that most of the information on the homepage should be accessible without a login and have already rearranged some of the content. This work is still under development so bear with us for pages that are still outdated and without information. We will focus on this in the coming months.

    The new area 'Professional Development' is where you will now find information about DARMA's learning universe such as the Annual Meeting, Training Courses, Workshops, Study Tours, Special Interest Groups and Master Classes. The information from the SIG's still require a login to view and whether this will change is up to each of the groups to decide. Two new Special Interest Groups kicked off in 2019. It is the one on Impact and the one on Private Foundations. To be included in the mailings to the group members logon to the website and sign up for 'membership' by ticking the relevant boxes.

    A lookback on 2019

    In 2019 DARMA announced 79 job openings relevant to Research Managers and Administrators. Check out www.darma.dk/jobs for current openings. At the moment four jobs are posted and we will continues positing relevant job opportunities here.

    We used the webpage for announcing News from the board and the Blog for announcement that can be commented on or shared by members. We also used the LinkedIn group as a great place for discussion. Sign up if you haven't already.

    Get involved

    At a DARMA event I attended I noticed the seat next to me was empty and a member looking desperately for a different place to sit. I was a little puzzled… and as it was the last seat, the poor guy had to sit next to me. Are you afraid of me I asked and he said no, but I always feel so guilty when I decline to volunteer, when you ask. My learning from this experience is obviously to stop pestering the DARMA members and I will make this my new year resolution. Having said that, I will however, as always, still invite everyone to write to me if you have input or ideas you would like to bring to the board or if you want to volunteer for a specific task - for instance by sharing your knowledge in a Master Class, start a SIG or plan a study tour.     DARMA has launched the first Master Classes, the RAAAP is on the way, DARMA members volunteer and several events are under development - this is just the headlines for this mail. If you are interested in knowing more continue reading. 

    Board Meetings

    The board has held it's first meeting in person and the schedule for the next meetings has been announced on Board meetings. This is also where you will find the minutes of the meetings (for DARMA members only)

    DARMA Master Classes

    There are so many experienced DARMA members and the best way to utilitise their knowledge for the benefit of our society is by bringing it forward and sharing it. DARMA therefore offers a platform for that. A Master Class is a new forum for sharing your knowledge. It can be in the form of a short meeting or a webinar. The thought behind it is that a subject matter expert shares her/his knowledge with an interested audience. 

    The first Master Class will be a webinar on CV Writing performed by Hanne Dahl Mortensen from SDU. The event takes place 24 October and you can sign up online

    DARMA members are active in INORMS 

    DARMA is member of INORMS. That means that as a DARMA member you are also an INORMS member. INORMS bring together research management societies and associations from across the globe. Its purpose is to enable interactions, share good practice, and coordinate activities between the member societies, to the benefit of their individual membership. The board has agreed that Lone Bredahl Jensen from SDU represents DARMA in the INORMS Research Evaluation Working Group, and Jan Andersen from DTU represents DARMA in the main INORMS Working Group. Both groups refer to the INORMS Council where the DARMA president is a member. See more on http://darma.dk/inorms 

    RAAAP Survey

    Jan Andersen has send me the following blurp to advertise for the RAAAP survey that will be sent out to you next week. We really hope you will take the time to answer the survey and thereby contribute to building the global knowledge about our profession. The results of the last survey are online and available on https://raaapworldwide.wordpress.com/

    Hjælp, der er en RAAAP på vej. Men bare rolig det er hverken en ny farlig virus eller en tropisk storm. RAAAP er den globale 5-årlige temperatur-tagning på vores profession: Hvordan har vi det, hvad laver vi og hvad er vores udfordringer. RAAAP gennemføres i et globalt samarbejde mellem forskningsadministrations foreninger i regi af International Network og Research Management Societies (INORMS).

    Upcoming events

    • Registration for the DARMA Bruxelles study tour has been launched on http://darma.dk/event-3243399
    • SRAI is hosting a workshop for individuals and teams who have research leadership and management responsibilities at their institutions (Vice Presidents, Assistant Vice Presidents, and Directors). It is highly popular and will be hosted at the SRAI Annual meeting in San Fransisco October 2019. See more on http://darma.dk/event-3487553
    • A study tour for the foundations to meet the University's Research Support Offices is scheduled for December 2020. University of Copenhagen has kindly agreed to host the meeting
    • Are you new in Research Management and Administration the DARMA introkursus is worth attending. It will be hosted 18-20 March 2020. The course is already announced and registration will open soon on http://darma.dk/event-3553647
    • The Annual meeting is scheduled for 13-14 May 2020 - so save the date already now. The place of the venue will change to be able to accommodate more members - but keep an eye out for the launch of the event as it usually gets fully booked very quickly

    Så er det højsommer, og du får en hilsen fra DARMA's formand. 

    Hvad er nyt?

    • INORMS 2020 er annonceret, og hvis du gerne vil deltage, var det måske en idé at melde dig som taler eller lave en poster presentation, der er åbent for forslag frem til den 16. august - husk også at søge DARMA's rejsestipendie

    • Sverige er i gang med at oprette en forening for RMA'er - SWARMA - læs mere på EARMA's hjemmeside

    • EARMA 2020 er annonceret, og der kan man også melde sig med speaking propsals eller poster presentations. Deadline for disse er 1. oktober 2019

    • Research Administration as a Profession Worldwide er en spørgeskemaundersøgelse af vores profession, og version 2 er undervejs. Jeg håber DARMA's medlemmer også denne gang vil tage sig tid til at svare på, hvordan det er at arbejde i vores branche. Resultaterne af sidste undersøgelse findes på RAAAP's hjemmeside, og link til den nye undersøgelse sendes ud, så snart den er annonceret

    • Der er løbende lagt nye spændende stillinger på hjemmesiden

    • eLearning - SRAI har udviklet et online micro-credentialing program som snart lanceres under navnet LevelUp. Jeg tror, det bliver oplagt at bruge til at blive lidt mere familiær med det amerikanske funding system, og venter spændt på at se det i funktion

    Derudover er hjemmesiden er opdateret, så mange links nu er mere mundrette, f.eks.


    Bestyrelsen mødes første gang den 9. september 2019, vi har afholdt et enkelt bestyrelsesmøde online i juni, og referatet ligger som altid på DARMA's hjemmeside. Når kadencen for de kommende bestyrelsesmøder foreligger, bliver dette også offentliggjort online på siden Board meetings and General Assemblies, der er tilgængelig, når du er logget ind.

    INORMS is currently accepting abstracts for the 2020 World Congress of the International Network of Research Management Societies in Hiroshima, Japan.

    Deadline: Friday, August 16, 2019
    by 16:59 GMT+1 (Midnight Japan Standard Time)

    Abstracts should relate to the leading theme of the conference Promoting Diversity in Research and Research Management Collaborations: More Trans-National, More Trans-Disciplinary, More Trans-Sectoral or to any of the five sub-themes:

    • Global Collaboration
    • Partnerships and Innovation beyond Academia
    • Research Evaluation and Impact
    • Professional Development of Researchers and Research Managers
    • Research Integrity and Responsible Conduct of Research

    If you are interested in speaking, don't pass up your chance to submit an abstract in the form of Interactive Sessions and Panel Discussions aimed at all levels, from early career to senior research managers. There is no limit to the number of abstracts that you can submit.

    DARMA's medlemmer indkaldes hermed til generalforsamling 2019, som bliver afholdt tirsdag den 21. maj, kl. 17:00-18:00 på Sinatur Hotel Storebælt i Nyborg i forlængelse af årsmødet. Det er ikke nødvendigt at registrere sig til generalforsamlingen.

    Forslag til generalforsamlingen

    Forslag, der ønskes behandlet på generalforsamlingen, skal sendes til sekretariatet mindst 4 uger før afholdelsen af generalforsamlingen; det vil sige senest den 23. april 2019. Såfremt der indkommer forslag, herunder forslag til vedtægtsændringer, der ønskes behandlet på generalforsamlingen, fremsendes disse sammen med revideret regnskab og ajourført dagsorden til medlemmerne senest 10 arbejdsdage før generalforsamlingen.

    Valg til bestyrelsen

    Bestyrelsen består af 7 Medlemmer - inklusive Formanden og Kassereren - valgt af generalforsamlingen blandt Foreningens Medlemmer. Bestyrelsesmedlemmer, Formanden og Kassereren vælges for 2 år ad gangen.

    Fire af DARMA's bestyrelsesmedlemmer er på valg i år. Der skal stemmes om tre medlemmer til bestyrelsen (ingen genopstiller) samt kassererposten (kassereren genopstiller).

    At sidde i bestyrelsen giver mulighed at engagere sig i at udvikle professionen inden for et område der giver mening i forhold til ens fuldtidsjob, og det er således en platform for både at lære og bygge netværk, som er til gavn for de institutioner der betaler ens løn. For information om bestyrelsesarbejdet kan bestyrelsens nuværende medlemmer eller formanden kontaktes.

    Medlemmer der er interesseret i at stille op til bestyrelsen, kan sende en kort beskrivelse af sig selv, deres erfaringer og lyst til at arbejde for DARMA inkl. et lille billede af dem selv til brug for information til medlemmerne og som sendes ud sammen med den endelige dagsorden for generalforsamlingen.

    First of all, I would like to wish everyone a happy new year. I hope 2019 will be great and I look forward to work for DARMA and to serve the association and our profession.

    I have started updating the DARMA homepage and now realise it has great many features I have not really used yet. I will try to bring these more into play in the future to engage and support member activities and spark a renewed interest in the DARMA networks - such as the Topical networks and the Special Interest groups. Some of these networks and groups have been short-lived others durable - it all depends on the interest and engagement of the members. More about this will follow in the future months where I slowly but surely will work my way through all the site and its functionalities. But if you are interested in volunteering please contact me or the board.

    Three weeks has passed since the DARMA general assembly and the DARMA board has just had it's first meeting.

    I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who voted online and a special thanks to the members who took the time to attend the extraordinary general assembly. I am honoured and humbled by taking on the responsibility of being the new President of DARMA and I look very much forward to working to strengthen our association and profession.

    I have been a volunteer before. I was on the DARMA board 2009-2013 and I have been on the board of SRA International since 2014. I think the that these associations for people who work in Research Management and Research Administration are great platforms to grow professionally. I have always valued the relevant network with colleagues from other Danish institutions and internationally. I particularly like that we help each other and share our knowledge across institutions; and I will work for that to continue.

    I would like to see

    • a continued and extended dialogue with the Danish Funders
    • a continued collaboration with the Ministry of Science
    • a continued professional programme throughout the year with workshops, seminars, study tours etc.
    • the annual meeting to still be the premier Danish event for professional networking with peers
    • an extended membership base which cover a wider range of research institutions types
    • an extended membership base which cover the entire project life cycle
    • more collaboration with our international sister societies

    This of course is not something I can do on my own, I look forward to working with the board and we look forward to working with members. One thing I’ve learnt from my years as volunteering in DARMA and SRA Is the importance of the members and the importance of engaging volunteers.

    It is my unreserved pleasure to announce that DARMA has a new President: Annedorte Vad, Head of the Research Support Office at Copenhagen Business School (CBS) was elected by acclamation at the Extraordinary General Assembly at CBS on 20 November, and by 86 votes for (one against) from the online voting. You can get to know Annedorte better by reading DARMA's nomination of her to the INORMS Award for Excellence in Research Management, which she was one of the first recipients of earlier this year in Edinburgh.

    I could not have wished for a better successor, and I am confident that DARMA will not only continue to be a relevant and important association, but will evolve and become even better under Annedorte's leadership. It feels really good.

    Now follows a transition period, during which all the legal and bureaucratic duties and powers are transferred from me to Annedorte. Sometime early next year, the formal handing over of the role as president will be transferred, most likely at the first Board meeting of the new year (the exact dates remain to be agreed upon).

    At the Extraordinary General Assembly and the web voting, the proposed amendment to the statutes was unanimously accepted. The statutes have been updated to reflect the amendment.

    Efter en lidt stille sommer begynder det at ske ting. EARMA har starte en tematisk gruppe om etik og integritet, der afholder næste møde i Bruxelles d. 8. november. EARMA udbyder også for første gang sin EARMA Early Stage Research Administrators Masterclass d. 15.–16.november, også i Bruxelles. Dette kursus er inspireret bl.a. af DARMA's introduktionskursus og oplægget ser meget spændende ud.

    D. 5. oktober afholdes der møde ved Lunds Universitet i DARMA's erfa-gruppe i personaleledelse. ERFA-gruppen er målrettet forskerstøtteledere med personaleledelse og flere oplysninger kan man få ved henvendelse til mig, Olaf Svenningsen eller gruppens tovholder, Pernille von Lillienskjold, AU.

    Så er der flere nye stillingsopslag:

    • Statens Serum Institut søger en forskningskoordinator, en stilling, som ser særdeles alsidig, interessant og spændende ud. Ansøgningsfrist 2. september.
    • D. 2. september er der også ansøgningsfrist til en stilling som Institutkoordinator ved Institut for Biologisk Psykiatri, Psykiatrisk Center Sct. Hans i Roskilde. Stillingen omfatter meget spændende forsknings, herunder iPSYCH.
    • Syddansk Forskerstøtte ved SDU's Sundhedsvidenskabelige Fakultet og Region Syddanmark har slået en stilling op som specialkonsulent. Det er "min" gamle enhed og det er en meget attraktiv stilling, hvor man vil arbejde i et dynamiskt miljø sammen med nogle af de bedste og sødeste mennesker jeg har arbejdet med. Ansøgningsfristen er d. 19. september.
    Jeg har tidligere skrevet om opslagene fra Juridisk Fakultet ved KU (frist 12. september) og Forskningsservice ved Lunds Universitet (frist d. 27. august).
